Once in a while he even heard gunfire, though seldom more than a shot or two, from up or down the river -- it got his imagination to working all the harder. He is an exceptional tracker who relies on his phenomenal instincts to lead the company out of harm's way. Newt had come to think that only two things were certain if you worked for the Hat Creek Cattle Company. As was his custom, Augustus drank a fair amount of whiskey as he sat and watched the sun ease out of the day. Naturally, Lorena immediately falls head over heels in love with him, giving up on the "sporting life.

Some of the cattle were so weak the cowboys had to dismount, , pull their tails and shout at them to get up. It’s funny that you mentioned that because I did often imagine those two actors speaking the dialog as I was reading. The evil Blue Duck is one of literatures most repulsive and inherently evil bad guys on the level of Anton Chiggah in No Country for Old Men or Heath Ledger's Joker in the film The Dark Knight. I'm going to have to watch some shows, read more books and come back to talk about these people I grew to love. Before this however, he goes to the ranch and after some reminiscing, plants the idea of a cattle drive up into unsettled Montana.

I didn’t know this until I was looking up some stuff on the net for this review, but Lonesome Dove was virtually snubbed at the Emmy Awards. Creating a large cast of characters and multiple storylines that eventually meet up, McMurtry creates a western novel that is more than the story of cowboys and Indians. With those millions of animals gone,” Gus reflects, “and the Indians mostly gone in their wake, the great plains were truly empty, unpeopled and ungrazed. and I mean “interesting” in a good way) I haven’t read a collection of short stories in a really long time so I might have to check out the first one. While some readers may find the length and slower pacing challenging, those who embark on this literary journey will be rewarded with a powerful and unforgettable experience. The author to my mind introduces many many dramatic narrative scenes but never spends more than a few pages on it, making it have a lack of depth to it. It’s a very, very long novel about cowboys and set in the 1860’s - not a literary comfort zone for me! If you are fans of books like Gone with the Wind by Mitchell or Centennial by Michener and you have not read this book, you must!

I would like to recommend to other local readers the most enjoyable and utterly captivating novel I have ever read. His nickname derives from once having drunk dishwater on a cattle drive, being so thirsty that he could not wait for the water barrel. She is a character worthy of Gus in every way, and is one of the few people who can steal a scene back from him. This usually happened at sundown, after a hard day of well-digging or horseshoeing; at such times Pea was doubly glad he worked with the Captain, rather than Gus. Starving, delirious, and suffering from exposure, he is discovered by the rest of the cowboys on the verge of death.

This story line tugged on my emotions the most as McMurtry weaves multiple characters' stories together to form a nexus at Clara's ranch. Lorena is taciturn, strong-willed, and often intimidating to the numerous cowboys who seek her affection, generally viewing her clients and admirers with contempt.

Pea Eye was so used to seeing Newt stand on one leg to clean his boot that he couldn't figure out what it was Gus thought he couldn't do.In the 3rd episode, we see the results of Jake’s moral laziness and the justice meted out by his friends. Here you’ve brought these cattle all this way,” he complains to his partner around the halfway mark, “with all this inconvenience to me and everybody else, and you don’t have no reason in this world to be doing it. The bug couldn't find its way out, but it could move around enough to upset the vaquero, who persuaded the young doctor to try and flush it. A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.
