Much like Real Madrid in the Champions League or Apple with the iPhone, LG’s C series of OLED TVs is so obviously the dominant force in its chosen field that it’s difficult to find fault with its dizzying array of talents. What’s notable though is how the C2 still manage to push its televisual performance forwards with the addition of its OLED Evo brightening tech. Even compared to last year’s model, this is a clear step up while setting a new standard for the price point. That equation is only going to be more and more appealing as we approach Qatar 2022, but we could hardly blame you for jumping on this bandwagon early. Gaming latency at 4K is 12.9ms, a few milliseconds worse than the C1; but VRR, Game boost (for 60Hz content) and 120fps support can bring latency to lower figures. With the Game Optimiser menu there’s room to customise the C2’s performance for whatever game you’re playing, whether that’s adjusting the latency or changing brightness levels. There are 4 x HDMI 2.1 inputs (HDMI 2 is eARC for sending lossless audio to a compatible soundbar), a headphone out, digital optical out, Ethernet, satellite, and aerial inputs, 3 x USB, and a CI+ 1.4 (Common Interface) slot. All of this does come at a higher starting cost than the C1. So the obvious question to ask is, does the LG C2 justify the extra outlay? Like the Cinema mode for Dolby Vision, this warmer picture made skin tones look very natural, adding a slight yellow tinge that felt very lifelike. As we watched the scene in which Dr Octopus and Spider-Man duke it out in the bank, the colors looked accurate and the contrast levels were well balanced.

Level-up your experience with an LG Soundbar

LG has slightly struggled to strike the right balance with the sound of its C-series TVs but the C2, while still not perfect, is certainly a step in the right direction. Filmmaker mode (as well as ISF Expert, Game Optimizer and HDR Cinema) does come with one caveat, though: you don’t get LG’s TruMotion feature, which increases sharpness, smoothness, and reduces judder in fast-moving scenes. In a 24p movie, four frames are artificially created in between the original frames, increasing the frame count to 120. Freeview uses HbbTV technology which combines broadcast & internet streaming. There are several moments in Netflix’s The Dig where the LG uncovers more detail in night-time scenes than the A80J, such as the scene where Lily James’ and Johnny Flynn’s characters connect after a Spitfire crash. The LG is better able to reveal the tree line behind them, and the outlines of the door of a little hut they end up at is more defined in the darkness whereas on the Sony it can barely be seen.

These differences are most pronounced in the Dolby Vision Bright mode, which is the one to use if there’s ambient light in the room or if you simply appreciate the punchier approach (which we do), but the C2 is also the better TV when the even truer Dolby Vision Dark preset is selected, maintaining the authenticity of the image while revealing more shadow detail and providing brighter highlights. Very occasionally it’s possible to see that a tiny bit of fine detail and subtle shading is being washed out by the C2 in the very brightest parts of the image (some clouds for example) but this is otherwise all gain and no pain. As a whole, it’s a noticeably more dynamic and enticing image. Most importantly, webOS 22 supports every streaming service you’re ever likely to need, complete with 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos where the services and content carry them. The big news is that, unlike its predecessor, the C2 is designated as an ‘OLED Evo’ model, which means it uses the latest, brightest OLED panel technology. Roughly speaking, this is the panel technology previously seen in last year’s excellent G1, but it’s not up there with the new G2, which adds a heatsink that allows the panel to be pushed even brighter. In LG parlance, the C2 has Brightness Booster while the G2 has Brightness Booster Max. Do bear in mind that while OLED picture quality typically scales up and down very consistently, the 42-inch and 48-inch versions of the C2 aren’t as bright as their larger siblings. Some don’t love Filmmaker mode, but I appreciate its inclusion for the purposes of accuracy. Despite that, colour accuracy out of the box wasn’t as good as the C1; but to my eyes the picture was very strong. However, avoid watching standard definition SDR content in this mode, since it’s a pretty dim image. Sound QualityEste televisor sirve para cualquier tipo de uso. The LG C2 is equally as impressive when it comes to HDR, and while not as bright as the G2, it can hit 754cd/m2 on a 10% window and 174cd/m2 on a full-field pattern in the Standard mode, and 756cd/m2 on a 10% window and 164cd/m2 on a full-field pattern in the more accurate Filmmaker mode. Although a smidge brighter than last year’s C1, it’s not a huge difference.

The other modes are much more inoffensive. Standard and Eco give you an anytime viewing mode that looks decent enough for most types of content (although very colorful scenes did look overly noisy). Cinema mode looked softer by comparison, adding in an extra level of detail and smooth movements that suit fast-paced scenes. This year sees the C2 carry the brighter OLED evo panel that LG brought to the market in 2021 with its G1 OLED. The design has been refined and there’s a new Dolby Vision feature to wring out more performance from HDR content. While the contrast levels are a little less pronounced than they are with Dolby Vision content, you’re still getting the benefit of the OLED panel’s self-emitting pixels and the picture looks very clear and bright as a result. That said, the C2 is still a sonic upgrade on last year’s LG OLEDs, providing a more authentic sound with better projected voices. It’s generally smoother and cleaner but with more punch and dynamism than before, and there’s more weight, too, but with convincing integration with the rest of the delivery rather than a lump of bass that emerges from nowhere as it does with many TVs.

The new α9 Gen 5 AI processor introduces a new level of Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro which this year assesses over 5000 areas of the image to determine how to apply the tone map to content. It is very clever real-time processing which certainly does have an immediate effect on the HDR10 picture quality; this is not accurate to the creator's intent, but it is effective and will win many fans. Purists can of course switch it off and it is not available with Dolby Vision content for obvious reasons. Standard mode is better, since it ditches processing for a more natural and smoother tone, while Cinema is best for films, finding more energy and applying processing to create depth.
